La Cordelle

Vierge - Cordelle

* the "Cordelle" chapel

Situated on the north side of the hill, at the middle-slope in the direction of the village of Asquins, the hermitage shelter the chapel Sainte Croix built by 1150 commemorating the preaching of the second Crusade by Saint Bernard.

It is in 1217 that two followers of François d' Assise - Brother Pacifique and Brother Louis - manage at Vézelay with mission to live and to preach the Gospel. The brothers Minors or Cordeliers, occupied the place where a convent was built, from the XIIIth century till the French Revolution. Sold as national property in 1791, the Cordelle chapel was transformed into stony career at the beginning of the XIXth century, then it became the annex of a farm. Buildings were destroyed then largely. Entered the heritage of the family of the counts of Chastellux from the very beginning, these acquire it by 1840. The former convent found its religious vocation in 1949, when the Franciscans established a hermitage there. The Brothers Franciscans always occupy the house.

There, coexist saint Bernard's burning soul and sweetness of Saint François d'Assise. The monumental cross outside the buildings symbolizes the place where Saint Bernard preached the second crusade in 1146.
Visit free of the chapel opened in the day.
