The VEZELAY VINEYARDS
The vineyards in Vézelay and the surrounding villages have been existing since the Gallo-Roman era. At the end of the 9th century the presence of the Benedictine monastery by Girard de Roussillon boosted the vineyard. Burgundy was on style and to ensure the winery supply to Paris, the production grew, reaching its peak in the 18th century. The vineyard extends about 500 hectares then on.
In the late 19th century, phyloxera ravaged the vineyards. At the end of the 70's, the vineyards were reborn and in 1985, Vezelay obtained the "Burgundy" label. In 1997, the "Burgundy Vézelay" label was recognized and four villages profited from this : Asquins, Saint-Père, Tharoiseau and Vézelay. Today, the vineyard covers hundreds of hectares and the grape varieties are : Chardonnay, Melon and Pinot noir.
