The VEZELAY VINEYARDS
The vineyards in Vézelay and the surrounding villages have been there since the Gallo-Roman era. At the end of the 9th century the establisment of a Benedictine monastery by Girard de Roussillon, boosted the vineyard. Burgundy is fashionable and to ensure the supply of wine to Paris, wine production grew, reaching its peak in the 18th century. The vineyard extends then on 500 hectares.
In the late 19th century, phyloxera decimated the vineyards. At the end of the 70's, the vineyards came to life again and in 1985 obtained the "Burgundy" appellation. In 1997, the appellation "Burgundy Vézelay" is recognized and four villages profit from this appellation : Asquins, Saint-Père, Tharoiseau and Vézelay.Today, the vineyard covers hundreds of hectares and the grape varieties are : Chardonnay, Melon and Pinot noir.
